Working Groups

There are four Working Groups meeting at the annual CGMS meeting: WGI on telecommunications; WGII on satellite products including satellite derived winds; WGIII on contingency planning; and WGIV on the integrated strategy for data dissemination from meteorological satellites.

In addition, there are four Working Groups interacting with CGMS. These are the International ATOVS Working Group - ITWG; the International Precipitation Working Group - IPWG; the International Winds Working Group - IWWG; and the International Radio Occultation Working Group - IROWG. The last three Working Groups originate from the CGMS annual meeting and WGII.

Working Group I (annual meeting)

Telecommunications

Introduction

The CGMS Working Group I on Telecommunications was originally set off, together with the Working Group on Meteorological products, as part of the decisions taken in the CGMS-18 plenary meeting in Geneva (CH) in 1989. The rational of the decision was based on the need to provide an adequate forum for the different CGMS experts to focus the discussions on technical topics, as well as allowing the plenary meeting to reduce the increasing number of agenda items to cover during the plenary meetings.

Working Group II (annual meeting)

Satellite products including satellite derived winds

Introduction

Working Group II, on 'Satellite Products ' meets at the annual CGMS meetings usually before the plenary session. The WG II meeting has a membership consisting of specialists on the delegations of participating CGMS members. Although participation is left to the discretion of the CGMS members there is  a high degree of continuity in regards to the active participation of delegations in the meetings of WG II.

International Precipitation Working Group

IPWG

The International Precipitation Working Group (IPWG) was established as a permanent Working Group of the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS) on 20-22 June 2001 in Ft. Collins, CO, USA. The IPWG is co-sponsored by CGMS and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and focuses the scientific community on operational and research satellite-based quantitative precipitation measurement issues and challenges. It provides a forum for operational and research users of satellite precipitation measurements to exchange information on methods for measuring precipitation and the impact of space borne precipitation measurements in numerical weather and hydrometeorological prediction and climate studies. The objectives include intercomparison of algorithms, validation of satellite based observations and stimulation of further development and research for enhanced use of satellite-based precipitation estimates.

Working Group III (annual meeting)

Contingency planning

Introduction

The Working Group on Contingency Planning (WG III) was established in 1992 in order to deal with the risk of discontinuity in the key data services provided to WMO, and with contingency action planning to mitigate such risks. The approach to contingency planning involves global planning supplemented by bilateral agreements based on the “help your neighbour” concept.

The Working Group was initially focussing on key missions for weather monitoring and forecasting. In 2002, CGMS agreed extend its considerations to climate monitoring missions.

Working Group IV (annual meeting)

Integrated strategy for data dissemination from meteorological satellites

Introduction

CGMS Working Group IV on integrated strategy for data dissemination from meteorological satellites was created in 2001. The Group provides a forum for the discussion and distribution of information on satellite data dissemination from current and future CGMS members’ satellite missions, data exchange and retransmission. Furthermore, the Group strives to standardise tools and equipment that will enable any authorised user to receive data from any satellite operator.

International Radio Occultation Working Group

IROWG

The International Radio Occultation Working Group (IROWG) was established as a permanent Working Group of CGMS at the 37th meeting on 26-30 October 2009 (Jeju Island, South Korea). The IROWG is co-sponsored by CGMS and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). IROWG serves as a forum for operational and research users of radio occultation data. The IROWG intends to build upon the expertise of scientists who are currently involved in the use and analysis of radio occultation data. It is established to foster the: (a) Development of better measurements, and improvement of their utilization; (b) Improvement of scientific understanding; (c) Development of international partnerships.

International Winds Working Group

IWWG

The International Winds Working Group (IWWG) held its first meeting in 1991 and became a formal working group of the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS) in 1994. The group addresses the science and applications of winds derived from feature tracking in consecutive satellite measurements (images), ocean surface winds and also winds derived from future space-borne lidars. IWWG provides a forum to discuss and coordinate research and developments in data production, verification/validation procedures, and the assimilation of products for numerical weather prediction. Objectives include the coordination of operational processing, the development of common verification and validation procedures, and the encouragement of a robust programme of scientific research resulting in advanced operational applications.
